Just Say Yes

Updated: Dec 11, 2020

One of my best friends works as a travel agent specialising in student travel. One of the most frequent interactions he has is with clients looking to undertake their first trip who are often a little nervous and unsure of how to proceed. Commonly this comes in the form of a question,

"How do I travel to X?"

I've always found his response to this question both brilliant and deceptively simple:

book flights

Whilst this may seem obvious, possibly even unhelpful, it's actually a very effective way of taking the leap into the unknown. Booking flights is an almost irrevocable, mental agreement with yourself that you are going on that trip. Once you have committed on that level, the planning and research can feel less daunting, and more enjoyable now that you can see the destination with more clarity.

My friend's simple philosophy led us to book a one way flight to Moscow just after our 21st birthdays. Seeing Siberia in winter was a breathtaking experience, and the lack of a return ticket allowed for an impromptu Christmas in Germany, a trip to Istanbul and then a side trip through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on the way home.

If in the future you are planning a journey and are unsure of how to proceed, take my friend's advice and just say yes. Photo: The Registan.
